  • Risk Analysis of Passing the PMP Exam

Below is a risk analysis using the Expected Monetary Value assessment for passing the PMP® exam. We first did this analysis in 2002. Since then, we’ve collected extensive data to validate this current assessment. Cheetah’s accelerated learning techniques have stood the test of time and are well proven effective for a wide array of students to easily pass the PMP exam after four days of prep. Also, there is now considerable evidence companies with more PMPs show significant improvements in operational performance. One thing though has stayed the same – the standard approaches to PMP exam prep still have the same challenges.

The Expected Monetary Value (EMV) evaluates the cost or benefit of specific risk events for different approaches. This analysis looks at two approaches to becoming PMP Certified:

    1. The Cheetah Approach for becoming PMP certified (four days of immersive accelerated learning and taking the PMP exam on the fifth day).
    2. The Standard approach for becoming PMP certified (take a class then study for six months before taking the PMP exam).

For each risk event, the two approaches have associated probabilities (the chance the risk event will happen) and a financial impact (positive or negative) if the risk event were to occur.  The table below summarizes the probability and impact for each risk event.

The Expected Monetary Value is the probability of the risk event occurring times the financial impact.  The option with the most positive EMV is the approach that best mitigates or exploits all the risk events (depending if the risk is negative or positive).

Below the table is a video that explains how to do the Expected Monetary Value risk analysis for evaluating the two different approaches to become PMP Certified.

A good start to becoming PMP certified is in making the right decisions on how to Prep for the PMP® Exam.
